8. INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTRIBUTORS

1. The journal “BOLETIM DE BOTÂNICA DA UNIVERSIDADE DE SÃO PAULO” publishes the results of original scientific research developed by Brazilian and foreign investigators in any field of Botany. Review articles and previous communications may be accepted.

2. Manuscripts in Portuguese, Spanish or English should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, IB-USP, Rua do Matão, Trav. 14, 321, 05508-900 - São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

3. Acceptance of manuscripts will depend on the decision of the Editorial Board, which will call on the assistance of specialists. The articles should contain only the information absolutely necessary for a proper understanding. Very extensive contributions may be published at the discretion of the Editorial Board. Fifty reprints are offered free of charge. Further copies may be obtained at cost price if ordered from the Editor at proof stage.

4. Manuscripts should be submitted either in electronic form (preferable) or hardcopy (three copies). Eletronic versions should be provided for text and tables in Word-compatible formats (.doc), .txt or .rtf-files, for figures as pdf or tif files  (300 dpi for pictures, 600-800 dpi for line drawings), sent on CD or DVD or to the eletronic address bolbotusp@gmail.com. All material must be double-space. Final version of accepted manuscripts and figures are needed in a digital format with figures, figure legends and tables as separate files. Original ink plates should be sent only after the paper is accepted. Each page of manuscript should be numbered. The front page must contain the title, names of the authors, their affiliation, short title and footnotes, if necessary, followed by an English Abstract (including the title in English in parentheses) and an Abstract in Portuguese or Spanish (with the corresponding title in parentheses). Please add 2-4 key words.

5. Separate pages or files should be used for tables, figures and legends. The latter can be in English and Portuguese (or Spanish). The words “figure” and “table” should be abbreviated in the text with initial capital letters: Fig. and Tab.

6. Bibliographic citations in text must include the surname(s) of the author(s) and date, in chronological order, without a separating comma between author and date. Commas must be placed only between date and name of the next author in the series. For more than two authors, only the first should be cited, with et al. and date. The symbol “&” should be used in citations referring to publications of two authors. For example, “Metcalfe & Chalk (1950)” and “(Metcalfe & Chalk 1950)”.

7. Botanical material should be comprehensively cited in taxonomic papers. The following items and sequence must be observed: site and date of collecting, name and number of collector and acronym of the herbarium where the material is deposited. Names of authors of taxa are abbreviated according to Brummitt, R. K. & Powell, C. E. 1992. Authors of plant names (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). Citation of classical taxonomic publications follow abbreviations in Stafleu, F. A. & Cowan, R. S. 1976-1988. Taxonomic literature (Bohn, Scheltema & Holkema. Utrecht).

8. The bibliographic list must be in alphabetical order, as shown in the following examples:
Abbreviations of scientific periodicals follow the recommendations of the “Botanico-Periodicum - Huntianum” (Bridson, G. D. R. & Smith, E. R. 1991, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh).

9. Illustrations (original and two copies) should be no more than three times their final publication size. For figures, the maximum available space (including legends) is 18 cm x 23 cm (breadth x length). Illustration plates should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers, and figures in each plate marked with letters “a”, “b”, “c” etc. All figures should be cited in the text. Originals must be drawn in Indian ink. Photographs should be on gloss paper and should not exceed twice the publication size. Use of scales is compulsory; these should be included in the illustrations.

10. The following items should be observed when preparing manuscripts of flora: a) descriptions of families and genera should not exceed 15 types lines; b) for references to infrageneric taxa observe the following sequence: genus + species + author (comma), bibliographic reference, page, figure and date of original description; c) abbreviate the word “diam.”; d) for references to material being investigated and organization of figures and bibliography follow the general recommendations mentioned in items 4,5 and 6.

11. Recent issues of the journal (vol. 20 on) should be consulted for additional information on organization of the manuscript, mainly of the style of setting out titles and sub-titles, subdivision of the text and laying out of tables and plates.
